Interesting Trees

The fabulous Copper Beech at Bolsover Castle

The magnificent Douglas Fir at Scone. This example is the very first that was introduced to Europe by David Douglas, being at least 250 years old. The tree, not Mr Douglas, that is.

A little older is the Yew Tree at Fortingall, Perthshire. Conservative estimates place it at 2-3000 years old but there have been suggestions that it might be anything between 5 and 9,000.

The Royal Oak at Boscabel House. (or, rather, the Son of the Royal Oak as the Victorians tended to pick at the original!)

Some Statues

Richard III at Middleham Castle

King Robert Bruce at Stirling Castle  (Wallace Memorial just visible through the mist)

William Wallace at Edinburgh Castle

Llewellyn at Conwy
(The only painted statue I have knowingly come across - any more anywhere?)

Welsh Castles

Beaumaris Castle

Aberwystrwyth Castle

Conwy Castle

Chepstow Castle

St Modwen at Burton-upon-Trent. She was once the abbess of Burton Abbey. The Church of St Modwen stands in the grounds of what is left of it. Some say that when she died, her soul was transported to Glory by 3 Swans ....

  3. I hope you can make it, Denise - so much to see all over the country. I think you saw the Cathedral and the Arboretum - Burtton was just up the road from there, but this statue wasn't there then!

    1. Also saw Tamworth Castle. Wondering about the cap-hat of St.Modwen. Weird shape compared to many nuns. Is there any explanations on this?

    2. To be honest, Denise, no. Maybe hair was coiled up inside it?
